INNER SKY “Inner sky” by Gianluca Favaron inaugurates the activities of Galaverna, a digital platform for audio and video content distribution, born by the partnership between Enrico Coniglio, Venetian musician, and Leandro Pisano, curator and journalist from Irpinia.

On the occasion of its inauguration, Galaverna opens the doors to the elegant and sophisticated electroacoustic music of Gianluca Favaron, who after capturing the alienating atmosphere of the last days of last year in a noisy, sinister and “machinic” Paris, he has reworked the collected materials in a mixture of rare poignancy, made of improvisation, field recordings, analogue scores and instrumental echoes. Favaron plunges into dissonant territories using a kind of miniaturist approach, voted to imperceptible changes and to slow state transitions: drones, sounds stripped to the bone and scattered instrumental fragments are mixed in an atonal distillation reminiscent of the evolution of some production made in Metamkine or less abstract in Minamo.

Ambient? Electroacoustic d’essai? Drone? If the electronic experimentation does not leave you indifferent, “Inner sky” is definitely for you, as an effective antidote to the boredom and banality that marked a sea of endless releases in which it becomes increasingly difficult to navigate, in the age of the music market decline.

Notes from the artist Gianluca Favaron is member of Under The Snow and Zbeen. “Inner sky” is the first step of a work entirely recorded in Paris and based on field recordings made on december 2011. The following episode “Outer sky” has been released by ripples recordings.

REVIEWS

LOOP MAGAZINE

Gianluca Favaron is an Italian sound artist who inaugurates the Galaverna netlabel run by Enrico Coniglio and Leandro Pisano. The first release, ‘Inner Sky’, is the first part of a work based on field recordings obtained in Paris in December 2011. The second part, ‘Outer Sky’ was released on Ripples Recordings. In this release Favaron works with the environmental recordings as a background and on top of them, processors and loops are used. In this process the sounds are stripped down providing a collage of tones and colours. [Guillermo Escudero]

THEDISCREETPLACE

[Saverio Rosi]

THE NEW NOISE

KULTURTERRORISMUS

Galaverna is a platform for multimedia, sound-and-art productions based in Italy that mainly operates in the area of electroacoustic and experimental music with a specific referral to the landscape/soundscape aesthetics. With its initial release “Inner Sky” by the Italy based sound artist Gianluca Favaron, which is is the first step of a work entirely recorded in Paris and based on field recordings made on december 2011 the label published a brilliant sound collage comprising deep and dense ambient sounds layered with music concrete, field recordings, vocals and glitches. A CLOSER LISTEN

2012 continues to be a year of new beginnings and new philosophies. As part of this movement, A Closer Listen is proud to welcome the Galaverna netlabel, a new venture run by Enrico Coniglio (curator of Mix #3) and Leandro Pisano. Galaverna (“hoarfrost”) is a champion of degrowth, an effort to achieve a more sustainable culture. With only one digital release per season, its carbon footprint is likely to remain small. Gianluca Favaron was previously featured here as half of Zbeen, whose K-frame was featured here this past winter. The quality remains high on Inner Sky, the first part of a pair; Outer Sky will be released on Ripples Recordings later this spring. While the release is field recording based, the electronics and loops define its character. A natural progression from K-frame, Inner Sky shares its sonic dynamism, its sci-fi timbre, its gurgles, beeps and bells. The term inner sky refers to the imagination. It’s the title of a book of Rilke translations, and has been used less convincingly in references to astrology. Inner Sky is certainly conducive to thought. The music doesn’t make one think of Paris (the source of the field recordings), but it does seem to take place elsewhere, in a location that may not actually exist. While grounding is present in the tolling of a bell or the rolling of thunder, the sonic field is dominated by percussive notes that flutter around the speakers like agitated fireflies. While the closing piece offers additional form, the strength of this recording is its seeming formlessness. This structure does, however, provide a clear ending to the set, and leaves us wondering what Outer Sky will sound like: consonant or dissonant, focused or diffused. This much is certain: we’re already looking forward to its release. [Richard Allen]
